Finding the right design

We'll design the right thing before we build it. I help the team turn uncertain product problems into clear, testable solutions.

1. Understand

Find the problem worth solving.

I work with the team to understand the customer, their goals, the existing experience, the constraints, and where the real problem lies.

2. Shape

Design the experience worth building.

Create product concepts, information architecture, workflows, interaction models, and interfaces.

3. Test

Make the idea real enough to learn from.

I build working prototypes that let stakeholders and customers experience the proposed product before the team commits to implementation.

I was the designer at Balsamiq, where I shaped the design direction for wireframing tools used by 1.4M+ creators worldwide. Co-author of Wireframing for Everyone and co-founder of the Information Architecture Institute.

Turning an AI idea into a testable product

Balsamiq · Design Lead · 2024–2025

balsamiq.com

AI-Powered Ideation
Balsamiq was exploring AI-assisted wireframing, but the product direction was still taking shape. I helped define the experience from discovery through prototype, using competitive research, design exploration, test scenarios, and working demos to turn an open-ended idea into a product direction the team could evaluate and build.

From customer problem to working product

Klarita · Solo Designer & Developer · 2026

klarita.app

0 to 1 Product Design
Designers have plenty of tools for making screens, but little structure for figuring out what those screens should solve. I researched that gap, shaped it into a product, designed the experience, and built Klarita solo with Claude Code. It guides designers from discovery to a clear, shareable product brief.

Taking a product from idea to App Store

Motivist · Solo Designer & Developer · 2026

App Store

Solo iOS App
I designed and shipped Motivist, a goal-setting app built around helping people turn long-term intentions into actions they can stick with. I took the product from initial concept through product strategy, UX/UI, development, testing, and App Store launch using Claude Code as my development partner.

Evolving a product used by 1.4M+ creators

Balsamiq · Design Lead · 2010–2025

Balsamiq Wireframes
As Balsamiq’s founding designer, I helped shape Wireframes from its earliest versions into a product used by more than 1.4M creators. Over 15 years, I evolved the experience across major product and platform changes while protecting the simplicity that made Balsamiq useful in the first place.

Turning personal knowledge into action

Unicron · Design Engineer · 2026

unicron.konigi.com

Unicron: Native Mac Second Brain
I designed and built Unicron as a knowledge graph to turn a folder of plain-text notes into an active workspace that surfaces what matters. It prepares daily briefs, organizes meeting notes, connects related information, and keeps action items moving. I took it from concept to a native Mac app in two months.

Nick Finck

UX Leader, Advisor, Coach, & Speaker

Michael is one of the most thoughtful and forward-thinking product designers I’ve worked with. He brings a calm, collaborative energy—genuinely open to feedback and focused on improving designs. He helped push our company forward in AI long before it was popular, with early experiments that shifted our roadmap and strategy. Any team working in AI or early-stage product development would be lucky to work with him.

Lizelotte Green

Product Manager

Michael’s approachable, clear communication, he showed me ways I could apply design thinking to developing administrative, HR, and operations practices and procedures. He has a growth mindset, and a willingness to stretch himself into new skill and knowledge areas. I knew anytime Michael was on a project with me, I could anticipate quality work, innovative, well-considered ideas, and joyful laughter.

Natalie Gould

CFO

Working with Mike genuinely changed how I think about design. He didn’t just do great work—he made the work better for everyone around him. He has this rare mix of craft, clarity, and flexibility that makes any challenge feel approachable. What I’ve always admired is how easily he moves between creativity and structure—diving deep into design details one moment, then improving a process or guiding a teammate the next. He’s got this genius vibe that’s backed by substance, discipline, and real heart.

Jessica Orellanes Petrillo

UX Research Lead

Michael is the epitome of a lifelong learner. His gift is an ability to learn at an incredible rate, due to his curiosity, drive, and brain plasticity. The way he has fully embraced AI and the vibe coding revolution is amazing. While many of us are lost in the woods, he has already woven it into his daily work and is pushing the boundaries with alpha features. While Michael is extremely humble, spend more than just a few minutes with him and you'll realize that he's a rockstar in disguise.

More About Me

I've worked in various roles from information architect to front end developer at companies including Sapient, Sling Media, Bell Labs, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was a prolific blogger, publishing iaslash and Konigi. Some of my designs received the Netdiver Award, were featured in the CSS Zen Garden, and design books including Principles of Beautiful Web Design, and The Thomson Handbook.

I helped shape UX practices on low-fidelity ideation. Through articles, presentations and the Wireframing For Everyone book, templates and icon sets for wireframing, and specialized graph paper designed for interface sketching and storyboarding, I introduced tools that became widely adopted by IAs and Interaction Designers. My templates became ubiquitous in industry portfolios, were acquired by OmniGroup, and earned a mention in Alan Cooper's seminal product design text, About Face. I continued to influence interface and interaction design practices as the product designer behind the Balsamiq wireframing application.

Outside of work, I enjoy life in Marin County, California with my wife, sons and our dog Daisy, and am energized by creative pursuits. In my free time I run, snowboard, work on art, DJ, and build apps.
